Innovative oromucosal and nasal dosage forms to
reduce PAH poLIutants absorbed by smokErs, workerS and exposed Subjects
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are persistent organic compounds generated by incomplete combustion processes.
They pose significant risks to both human health and the environment, due to their well-documented carcinogenic and mutagenic properties. The IPALESS project aims to investigate the mechanisms underlying PAH absorption and accumulation within oral and nasal mucosal tissues by developing targeted pharmaceutical formulations, specifically nasal sprays and mouthwashes enriched with PAH-sequestering molecules.
These medical devices will facilitate rapid and efficient removal of PAHs directly from mucosal surfaces, significantly reducing exposure and associated health risks. Additionally, the project focuses on identifying highly biocompatible molecules capable of selectively binding PAHs without altering tissue integrity, thus ensuring safe, long-term, and daily use.
The mouthwashes developed in the project contain specific molecules capable of selectively sequestering polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).
The nasal sprays developed in this project are formulated to effectively remove PAHs from nasal mucosa, reducing their absorption.
The IPAless project primarily addresses occupational categories regularly exposed to PAHs, such as firefighters and municipal police officers, as well as smokers and passive smokers, groups particularly vulnerable to PAH contamination. The proposed solutions offer these individuals practical and effective tools to mitigate the health risks associated with prolonged and routine exposure.
